general information
Roman Slavery
Unlike slavery in North America, slavery in Rome was not based on race. Most slaves in Rome were prisoners of war, or the children of slaves. Slaves were important to Roman daily life. Because of this, most slave owners treated their slaves well. A lot of slaves had duties to do on farms or in business.Slaves were considered property. Some Roman slaves has led a rebellion, such as the one led by Spartacus in the Servile Wars.
Roman Manumission
Manumission is the act of giving freedom to a slave. If a slave is given their freedom, they were allowed to vote in Rome, but they could not hold a public officer position. A freed slave was considered a libertus and a citizen. If a freed slave had children, they would be also considered a citizen of Rome, and have full rights.
How this Is a Turning Point
Without the slaves and manumission system in Rome, the world would not be where we are today. The way Rome set up their slavery and manumission systems affects many other countries' systems. Romans were able to give their slaves freedom if the owner felt the slave deserved it. Owners often gave freedom to their female slaves to marry them. Later in history, other counties had owners who did the same thing.
The idea of slavery of prisoners of war also affected the way other countries obtained their slaves. If the Romans had not thought of this idea when they did, a different country might have later on, and it might not have had the same affect on the world that the Romans did. The way the Romans treated their slaves also affected the world greatly. Romans showed the world that they should treat their slaves well because the owners need their slaves. Although not every country learned from this idea right away, eventually most countries did. Also, the idea of slavery not being based on race was used by a few countries as well. An example of a country that didn't base slavery on race was Brazil. Rome was an influence to many other countries as well.
